1000 Ways to Enhance Wordpress

feature photo

We receive numerous requests on “how to” add functionality to various blogging platforms, especially WordPress (which in our opinion is the best overall platform.)

If you are a Wordpress user- realize that there is a vibrant and thriving community of technical developers, creative users, and astute business minds that are enhancing the Wordpress platform on an hourly basis. The very 123 Social Media site is based on the Wordpress platform and has anywhere between 35 to 60 active plugin modules, a few dozen custom pieces of code, and a modified template for our visual theme.

If you are looking for a specific functionality- there are two basic places you can search:

The Official WordPress.org Plugin Directory- (1,866 plugins, 4,082,686 downloads, and counting)
The Weblog Tools Collection (plugins category) - has short reviews and descriptions of many plugins as they are created and evolve.

The official Wordpress Directory (with 1800+ plugins) signifies the existence of roughly 1000+ additional features being developed for Wordpress. Many of the plugins have sites dedicated to them and represent individual developers as well as large teams (some plugins have over 100+ contributing members) Many users can add new functionality by using these plugins, but they are not “sure fire” solutions and sometimes require additional technical work to make them work in unison or customize for a specific need.

John Pozadzides did a wonderful presentation on this topic (45 Ways to Power Up Your Blog - Video Here) and has a text version of enhancements you can make to wordpress on his site.

This economy of development is simply amazing. Open-source platforms like Wordpress are collecting massive amounts of intellectual and creative power that compete with the largest corporate development teams and usually exceeds the limitations placed upon them by bureaucracy and budgetary constraints. Imagine having a team of 5,000 developers working on your site, and you begin to understand the economy of scale found being leveraged by thousands of businesses.
