Updated 06-30-09 - So you finally convinced your organization to get on the social media rocket… but what about all of those questions? What happens when an executive posts photos of the corporate party on Facebook or the mail room guy loads a video of the entire office on YouTube? No worry… everyone has to have a policy.
To help narrow in on the questions and problems everyone has when dealing with a new communication channel, I’ve collected fifteen (thirty+ as of 03/16/09) great resources:
POLICY EXAMPLES
- Blog Council – Disclosure Policy
- Greteman Group (Marketing Agency)
- IBM Social Computing Guidelines
- CISCO Internet Postings Policy
- HP Code of Conduct
- Intel – Social Media Guidelines
- Opera Employee Blogging Policies
- Sun Guidelines on Public Disclosure
- Harvard Law School – Terms & Policy
- BBC – Editorial Guidelines, personal use of Social Networking
- US Navy – Web 2.0 – Utilizing New Web Tools
- CivilService – Code for Online Participation
- (CIPR) Chartered Institute of Public Relations Social Media Guidelines
- CIPR – Social Media Guidelines for Consultation
- US Air Force Social Media Policy (with flow chart)
- Porter Novelli (PR Firm – added 2-26-08)
- Government Policy (added 2-26-08)
- Dow Jones Social Media Interaction Policy
- WellsFargo Community Guidelines
- Wall Street Journal
- GM Motors Blogging Policy
- Gartner Web Participation Policy
- Associated Press Social Media Policy
- ESPN Employee Social Media Policy
- ESPN Talent / Anchor Social Media Policy
- Kodak Social Media Policy / Marketing Book (tongue-in-cheek award for mixing flagrant marketing material with pseudo-policy)
You can also take a look at the Edelman report on President Obama’s social media campaign (PDF). It has some interesting conclusions to the way social media was used on a massive scale.
PR Agencies and Privacy – MediaCzar (Mat Morrison) – This is probably one of the most detailed “train of thought” post about social media policy when dealing with an agency perspective I have seen. Thanks to Mat for detailing his thoughts.
The New PR Wiki - Includes CNN, General Motors, Dept of the Navy and many others. Good resource of older policies as well.
If you know of any we have missed, please let us know in the comments below!

Thanks for adding some insightful viewpoints on some of the pros/cons to a few of these policy examples. Anyone reading these should take the time to consider the extra commentary you added on your site.
It makes me think that my “no policy” is not going to cut it moving into the future as more and more of my business is in the social media realm. The military policies will be interesting to read, probably a very unique perspective on security sensitive transmissions.
