Social Media is best defined as an emerging form of online media that shares information through a social connection.

THE BASIC IDEA

Participation: Social Media is based upon the concept “united we stand.” It shares the common belief that as more members become involved, the actual message being relayed will transform based upon the consensus of the viewers.

Conversation: The traditional marketing method is all about “push”, while social media is all about “pull” Members are invited to collaborate by choice, have an option to contribute to the idea, and can benefit from group-thinking.

Community: Social Media is based upon the group network. The basis for the community can be geographical, personal, or professional. Examples of communities are ActiveRain (Real Estate), Blogher (Women Bloggers), and the Seattle PI (News Paper).

Relationship: Social Media allows every member of a community to express their own voice and opinion. Through dialogue and on-going discussion, personal and professional relationships are created. Some example Social Media sites focus on the details of professional connections (Linked-In), some sites focus on finding a great job (Jobster), and some focus on meeting real world people (Meetup)
